Credits standards for households

According to the Bank Lending Survey published by the National Bank of Romania, in 2017 Q2, banks tightened significantly credit standards for loans for house and land purchase as well as for consumer credit. Credit institutions pointed to the following determinants behind this evolution: the NBR’s monetary policy decisions or prudential measures, expectations regarding general economic context, requirements concerning the level of indebtedness, expectations regarding households’ financial standing and the risk on borrower’s creditworthiness.

NBR: Inflation Report

Developments in inflation and its determinants

The annual CPI inflation rate consolidated in positive territory, reaching 0.85 percent in June, after having posted a notable increase in Q2 (+0.67 percentage points versus end-Q1). Its path reflected upward domestic pressures, arising from the pick-up in companies’ production costs, whose pass-through into end-user prices for consumer goods is favoured by the opening of the positive output gap.

Industrial production and production in construction

Industrial production up by 1.3% in euro area and up by 1.2% in EU28

In May 2017 compared with April 2017, seasonally adjusted industrial production rose by 1.3% in the euro area (EA19) and by 1.2% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In April 2017 industrial production rose by 0.3% in euro area and by 0.1% in the EU28. In May 2017 compared with May 2016, industrial production increased by 4.0% in both zones.

NBR: monetary policy

The annual inflation rate advanced to a slightly higher-than-projected 0.64 percent in May 2017, after resuming in April the growth that had been discontinued in March 2017 (0.61 percent, against 0.18 percent). Behind this stood chiefly the step-up in core inflation and the slower negative growth of administered prices, as well as the rise in volatile food prices. The effects of these determinants were partially offset by the impact of slower annual fuel price dynamics, amid a renewed decline in the global oil price.
